We do, however, have a much better understanding of what happened along the Fugitives' Trail where a number of the vanquished British soldiers tried to escape, for the simple reason that some men lived to tell this tale.

One of them was William Walwyn Barker, a trooper in the Natal Carbineers, and grandfather of the author of this book. He was an incredibly brave young man, and was recommended for the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Fugitives' Drift.

The author's family has played a prominent role in South Africa's history. Denis Barker has woven the story of him family into the sage of South Africa, culminating brilliantly in his grandfather's heroic actions at Isandlwana. It is a delightful narrative, written in an easy, flowing style. His rendition of Barker's actions is truly gripping.
