WILD SPORTS OF THE WORLD
Greenwood (James)
Description:
Book Description: xxii + 426pp. Original blind-embossed and gilt decorated cloth Hardcover. Illustrated with altogether wonderful and exceedingly dramatic chromolithographs (from watercolours by J B Zwecker, Harrison Weir and Harden Melville, engraved and printed by W Dickes) of fiercesome wild animals involved in inflicting dreadful injuries on intrepid Englishmen (9 of 10 called for present – missing The Horse). Dozens of woodcuts in the text (from designs by Harden Melville and William Harvey, engraved by H Newsom Woods) together with 6 folding maps of the continents showing the habitats and animals and plants of the known world." (all present).
Book Condition: Both hinges are cracked and I suspect that the spine has been reglued to the text. The cloth is thread-bare to the top and bottom of spine and the corners of the book. Cloth is faded on spine and towards margins. Some light foxing to preliminary pages. Internal binding is tight. A good copy.
Intended to "strengthen the spirit and inform the mind of the young reader." A fine mid-nineteenth century adventure book. Contains chapters such as "How the Lion is Hunted," "Habitat of the Rhinoceros," and "The War Elephant of the Ancients."
