Vrystaatse Erfenis. Bouwerk en geboue in die 19de eeu (1982)

Schoeman, Karel

Description:

Karel Schoeman received the Recht Malan prize for this fine book.

Its range, in 152 pp of text and appendixes and 71 monochrome illustrations in the text, takes us from indigenous structures, pioneer huts and mission buildings all the way to the "Golden Era" and the late-Republican decade of 1890-1900. In addition, an inserted 24 pp art-paper section carries 129 captioned colour photographs of buildings and architectural embellishments, a few images of which are shown.

Many, perhaps most, Free State and architecural collectors will have this book. Fortunately for those who don't, copies of Schoeman's authoritative and attractive book turn up quite frequentlyly.

This is an excellent copy. The full-colour photographic laminated dustjacket has a molar-sized chip at the head of the spine. The matching olive-green paper-board covers, white to spine, have light edge-wear. The plain endpapers are unmarked and undiscoloured, as are the text and its valuable appendixes and index, and both sets of illustrations.
