Vroee Plase en Nedersettings in die Oranje Vrystaat (1955)
Walton, James
Description:
This little gem is a slim volume, rare this version, by a world-famous architectural and conservationist author, whose original English text was translated by Dr S C Hattingh. The work bears the quality production stamp of many of Balkema's publications.
While the author thanks his collaborators, the publisher gives no details of designer, printer or binder (which, for such an attractive little book, seems a pity).
The elegant drawings and the photographs are all by the author.
The blue cloth-board covers, gilt to the front, are in at least fine condition. The free endpapers are lightly sunned. A few lines of good wishes are neatly penned on the front free leaf. A smooth wove paper is used for the first 28 pp - text, drawings and bibliograpy - while 16 monochrome photographs are reproduced in the following 8 pp art paper section. Everything is clean, white and undamaged. A nice touch for such a slim volume is that the upper page edges are tinted a matching blue.

- Additional Information: Fontein Books has for several years participated in Antiquarian Auctions and its predecessor. It specialises in historical and contemporary books on the Free State and Northern Karoo, and is also an active buyer and seller on commission in these and other fields. Fontein's owner, Richard Proctor-Sims, was an editor, writer and small publisher until 2005, when he moved from Johannesburg to Philippolis, the first settlement (1822) north of the Gariep or Orange River, where he opened his first physical bookshop (to which buyers and sellers are welcome), with reasonable holdings in Africana, both Anglo-Boer wars, biography, history, military history, natural history and travel. He regularly visits Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and offers to deliver heavy or valuable books or sets to these cities on such visits. Richard Proctor-Sims retains the copyright of Fontein's Antiquarian Auction descriptions and these may not be reproduced without permission and acknowledgment.
