At the turning of each century life seems faster and more vivid. As the twentieth century draws to a close, a journey back through time to the Cape of a hundred years ago offers perspectives that are both nostalgic and enriching.

In the late nineteenth century the Mother City offered as many surprises, novelties and challenges as it does today. the heterogeneous community was never more ebullient. In spite of a building boom, the eye and the imaination still had space to roam. The natural beauties of sea and mountains and the glorious climate helped compensate for what many people lacked materially.

Hardback with dustcover, marbled endpapers 184 pages text with plates, maps and text. Fine.
