Two Years’ Captivity in German East Africa (1918)

[Holtom E(rnest) C(harles)]

Description:

[Holtom E(rnest) C(harles)] Two Years’ Captivity in German East Africa, being the Personal Experiences of Surgeon E.C.H., Royal Navy. Hutchinson & Co., Paternoster Row, London. Nd.
8vo., I, 239pp. with frontispiece map of ‘German East Africa; original dull salmon cloth with black lettering on spine giving the author’s surname, that is not mentioned on the title page. (Ownership inscription in ink on free end-paper “John C. S. Paterson, November 1916”. In very good condition.

A very scarce work, only modern reprints and POD issues appear on the internet book sites at present. Six copies are listed on COPAC with the date either being cited as (1918) or (1919). As the author was taken prisoner in November 1914 and arrived back in England in December 1916 the date of the ownership inscription is a little spurious. All the same the above copy, at the rear, has a publisher’s catalogue. “Messrs. Hutchison & Co. are pleased to announce Novels for the Autumn of 1918 … “. This indicates that the book appeared no later than early in 1918 possibly very early in the year when a mistake is often made in writing a date.
