Thomas Major Cullinan. A biography (1974, ex-lib)
Helme, Nigel
Description:
Minimal library damage. Indeed, the plastic protection, retained in this case, has kept the unclipped dustjacket in a near-fine state. The cover material was not inspected under the tape-sealed jacket, but some rubbing could be seen at the foot of the spine and and for 60 mm towards the cover edges. Plain blue endpapers. x + 271 pp, including 11 appendices, reference to sources and index. Profusely illustrated in colour and b/w, with illustrations captioned and numbered with text but not listed in the prelims.
Apart from library routine and one exception, the book is clean and unmarked. The exception is that three lines on p 14 have been marked and in some 130 words in ink on p 15 a reader has claimed, inter alia, that ". . . Thomas Cullinan worked for my Grandpa Gibson at Hibernia -- he was a cousin. He wanted to marry my mother (Sarah Jane Gibson) & she spurned him, thinking him rather a tawdray . . ." Potential buyers will decide whether this this handwritten note adds to or detracts from the value of this copy, which is otherwise complete and undiscoloured.

It specialises in historical and contemporary books on the Free State and Northern Karoo, and is also an active buyer and seller on commission in these and other fields. Fontein's owner, Richard Proctor-Sims, was an editor, writer and small publisher until 2005, when he moved from Johannesburg to Philippolis, the first settlement (1822) north of the Gariep or Orange River, where he opened his first physical bookshop (to which buyers and sellers are welcome), with reasonable holdings in Africana, both Anglo-Boer wars, biography, history, military history, natural history and travel. He regularly visits Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and offers to deliver heavy or valuable books or sets to these cities on such visits. Richard Proctor-Sims retains the copyright of Fontein's Antiquarian Auction descriptions and these may not be reproduced without permission and acknowledgment.
