One of 1000 copies, this book records the history of the participation of South African forces in the Great War of 1914-1918. Operations commenced for the purpose of obtaining certain objectives in German South-West Africa. These had suddenly to be suspended and attention diverted to something entirely different - the rebellion within the Union. An Infantry Brigade was raised and intended to represent the Union in France, but found its way to Egypt. Later, this Brigade returned to France, and was practically annihilated. A Signal Company was sent to France, a Brigade of Field Artillery to Egypt and Palestine, followed by the Cape Corps. Recruiting for the Royal Air Force drew many South Africans. With maps and photographs; 230pp., including Appendix 1: Victoria Crosses won by South Africans; and Appendix 2: Casualties.
Condition: the text and illustrations are in good condition, with occasional pencil notes in the margins; the maroon boards are good, spine faded. The front free end-paper is, however, missing, and the title page bears the details of B.H.F.Ambler, Three Rivers, Vereeniging, plus some other inscriptions.
