Unpaginated (72 pages including 4 pages of commercial advertisements), 30 full-page illustrations from sketches by the author with captions opposite, yellow pictorial card wrappers - title printed in red and black, tied with red silk thread, light staining at the top corner of some pages, a very good copy.

Greenwall (R.) ARTISTS & ILLUSTRATORS OF THE ANGLO-BOER WAR, page 229, 'Soldier-artist. Watson was a trooper with the 18th Company (Glasgow) Imperial Yeomanry...Watson's company arrived in Table Bay on 19th March 1900...During his stay in South Africa Watson planned and illustrated The Trooper's Sketch Book of the Boer War'.

SOUTH AFRICAN WAR BOOKS, An Illustrated Bibliography, page 200 (illustrated on page 65), 'Sketches of the Boer campaign compiled by trooper Watson of the Imperial Yeomanry, being a record of sixteen months active service. The volumes comprised of thirty sketches depicting mundane incidents in the life of a trooper on the veldt. The illustrations include scenes of camp life, outpost duty, foraging and field ablutions. Each drawing is accompanied by a descriptive text.'
