Otherwise the books are tightly bound and in Very Good condition. No date, but latest reference in text is 1895. This edition specially prepared for subscription by Cassel & Co and sold by D E McConnell & Co, Cape Town. A remarkable book. A detailed history of Africa starting with brief references to Ptolemy and early Portuguese and Dutch exploration, but concentrating on the British commercial and missionary expeditions in the period 1790 - 1890. Development of trade in the Gulf of Guinea (West Africa), Timbuctoo, the Niger River, Mungo Park, the Nile, Great Lakes, source of the Nile, David Livingstone, Stanley, Missionaries in Central Africa, a hunter's paradise, international explorers, colonisation in west, east and south Africa, the Scramble for Africa and Germany and Italy in Africa are among the topics covered.
