The Saga of The Transvaal Scottish Regiment 1932-1950
Birkby, C. (ed.)
Description:
An account of 'a great South African Regiment' in the Second World War. From the Foreword by Field-Marshal J.C. Smuts: " The Transvaal Scottish are no strangers to me because wherever South Africans have triumphed or endured hardship or met reverses in was they heve borne their share of the burden. What a proud record theirs is. I remember them before Aus in 1914 and at Trekkopjes in 1915; their famous march from Erongo to Otaviefontein made military history. In 1940... I chose the 1st Battalion to represent the Transvaal in my handpicked 1st SA Infantry Brigade... and in 1947 saw them proudly recieve new Colours from His Majesty the King."
Ex library with all the usual stamps and markings. pp prelims + 749 text, many b/w photographs, in-text maps and four fold out maps. Grey library binding, titling and catalogue number to spine, boards/spine a bit rubbed. Slightly canted. Text block edges age-toned, ink mark / scratches to bottom edge, 2 of the 4 fold-out maps not flush with edges, due to previous misfolding. Library's donation plate glued to half title page, donated by 'Transvaal Scottish Regimental Association'. All fold-out maps intact, but two are rather chipped and creased. Bottom half of rear free end paper cut off.
