-

Description:

"An Illustrated Biographical Sketchbook of Natalians" - A good copy of a scarce, very early edition of the biographical dictionary, giving unique insight into the most prominent early pioneers, businesspeople, mining agents, merchants, bankers, accountants, academics, entrepreneurs, engineers, military men, missionaries, etc... of particular interest are Ernest Leslie Acutt, T.F.Baynes (who witnessed the first 15lb. shot fired by Jameson's Raiders against the Boers), Alfred Cyril Braby (publisher), William Watts Cato (land surveyor, Durban), Peter Davis (Proprietor of the Natal Advertiser and Natal Witness), Edwin Greenacre (merchant), A.D.Nourse (cricketer), Shepstone (A.J., H.C., J.W.,P.W. and T.), F.S.Tatham (Pietermaritzburg), John Medley Wood (Director Botanic Gardens), 223pp; this copy's contents are in good condition, but the cover is in a worn state; p.219/220's fore-edge is heavily creased and chipped due to having been loose (now stuck back in); some marking and small tears to some of the pages; the boards are worn with heavy wear to corners, and the spine has been replaced with white cloth tape and the title written along it by hand, original gilt title on front board, inner binding good except for the first gathering up to about p.14 which is shaken and loose, the joint between title page and preface the most severely affected (cracked); olive green end-papers surprisingly good, with slight evidence of some previous worm activity on all four corners of the boards. Extremely scarce.
