The memoirs of four times President of the South African Republic, as told by himself; 235 and 306pp. respectively.

Hand-written note on the verso of the half-title reads as follows: "Thomas Wright, 'Grafton', Russell Park, part of Bedford: a leading "Pro-Boer" before the South African vile War, and during the War the correspondent with Kruger, who had the honour and distinction of having a mob of several hundreds around his house 'Brookville', Birmingham at 2 o'clock a.m. when the majority of that degenerate town went mad at the relief of Mafeking being reported, the maffickers doing damage, whereon he sold his house to a jingo, who repaired several large plate glass cracked and broken windows, which circumstance brought him to Bedford - (1901, T.W.). The ignorant deluded Maffickers are seen nightly suffering distress, the just penalty of their guilty blackguard war, which was inaugurated in that degraded town. The whole country is groaning under the just punishment of that wicked war. South Africa, formerly prosperous, is now a distressful country. May England's connection with that country to which she had been so long a curse speedily cease, and may a South African Republic of all the states united soon take place so that England's lies, robberies, and crimes may be only bleak history of the past. He presents these 2 volumes to Mr F.W.Sharpe of Odell, Beds; with all best wishes."

.

Contents: volume one dealing with his early days and private life, through the Civil War of 1861, the Native Wars, The War of Independence 1880, his first and second Presidencies; volume two dealing with his third and fourth Presidencies, his visit to Europe, and an extensive Appendix A-J containing his speeches, telegrams, dispatches, as well as the Proclamation by President Steijn against the Annexation of the Free State.
