THE LIFE AND WORK OF CHARLES BELL

Brooke Simons (Phillida)

Description:

Including The Art of Charles Bell: An Appraisal, by Michael Godby.

176 pages, colour frontispiece portrait, illustrated throughout in colour with paintings, sketches and plans by Bell, purple cloth, very good in the dust jacket.

'Bell, born in Scotland in 1813, arrived at the Cape aged sixteen and remained in the Colony for almost five decades, during which he contributed significantly to its aesthetic, social and business life. Gifted artist, wood carver, engraver, sculptor, expert in designing brass and silverware, philatelist, authority on heraldry, land surveyor, traveller, geologist, archaeologist and director of companies - the list of his interests and accomplishments seems endless and his output was considerable. Yet for over a century after his death Charles Bell was little known.' Editor's note.
