The Life And Correspondence of Sir Bartle Frere
Martineau, John
Description:
Two volume set, in original red boards with gilt crest on front cover, and gilt spine titles; first vol.516pp, second vol.469pp. both with colour fold-out maps between rear end-papers, and portrait frontispieces of Frere (9 further maps and sketches included within the text of vol.1, and 2 within vol.2). The first volume deals with his education and life in Bombay and Calcutta, the second volume his settling in London, trips to Abyssinia, Zanzibar, Muscat, etc... and then his appointment to the Cape and his observations on conditions in the country, in particular the Transvaal, Damaraland, Namaqualand, the Zulus under Cetewayo, Isandhlwana, the Boer Camps, Shepstone as an administrator, Wolseley, Ulundi, the Zulu Kinglets, Secoceni, relations with the Dutch, Basutos, Boer emissaries at Cape Town, Bechuanaland, etc..etc.. Books' condition: the boards are considerably rubbed, worn, and discoloured, with fairly heavy wear to spine ends (esp.vol.2), inner hinges cracked, end-papers spotted, corners bumped, binding shaken and gatherings loose in places, page edges grubby. Despite all this however, the texts of both volumes are surprisingly clean and relatively unmarked, with no marginal notes, inscriptions or other blemishes whatsoever. A worn but very serviceable set.
