The Letters Of Olive Schreiner 1876-1920 (including a copy of 'Olive Schreiner, A Selection')
Cronwright-Schreiner, S.C.
Description:
"Though the 'Life' is complete without the 'Letters', they may be regarded as a necessary complement to the 'Life'. Largely if not wholly autobiographical and often constituting a kind of intimate diary from day to day, they are essential to the understanding of her inner life."[author's comment, Preface]. This book was drawn from information from around six thousand letters, and S.C.Cronwright states that letter writing for her "was a form of her imperative impulse to express herself to others, and constituted a mild form of exercise". The book has 13 Chapters, 410pp. including index, with Appedixes A-J, including her speech to a public meeting in Cape Town on 9th July 1900, protesting against the attack on the two SA Republics, plus others on The Boer War, Women's Suffrage, A Letter on The Jew, Conscientious Objectors, Peace Meetings, etc..etc..and 8 photographic plates, one being a sample page of her hand-writing. Book condition: olive-coloured boards good, though with mottling (liquid erosion?) to upper front board and rear upper area especially, and one small wormhole half way up rear hinge going in to the binding (also small area of worming affecting margins of last few pages); spine clean and bright, end-papers good (small ink owner's inscription), page edges and end-papers foxed, some tender areas of inner hinges, text and plates good. Additional item: 1968 Oxford paperback 'Olive Schreiner - A Selection', edited by Uys Krige, 10 chapters, featuring the background to The Story of an African Farm, Trooper peter Halkett of Mashonaland, Woman and Labour, Thoughts on South Africa, Letters, etc... in very good condition, 214pp.
