4to; original blue cloth, blocked in gilt on spine and upper cover; t.e.g.; pp. xi + (iii) + 462, incl. index; five plates, incl. two-page facsimile letter; eight map plates, some of which folding, displaying ten numbered maps. Spine darkened; covers stippled, sunned, and worn at extremities; upper hinge starting; gift inscription to front free endpaper; fore-edge of one folding map a bit frayed; regular, light browning; endpapers and outer leaves foxed; occasional spotting. The title page highlights the regiment's involvement in the following battles and campaigns: Namur 1695, Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde, Malplaquet, Egypt, China, Pegu, Sevastopol, New Zealand, Afghanistan 1879-80, Egypt 1882, Tel-el-Kebir, Nile 1884-5, South Africa 1900-02. The illustrations include a plate of 'Memorials to Those Who Fell in South Africa' and there is a folding 'Sketch Map to illustrate the operations of the 1st Batt. Mtd. Infantry of the Royal Irish Regiment in South Africa.' (SABIB 2, p. 439) The appendices are considered a highlight of this authoritative history.
