The Amazing Bushman - With Original Watercolour by Battiss
Walter W Battiss
Description:
Published privately by the Red Fawn Press, Printed by Wallachs' Limited, Pretoria, 1939. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good, some very light foxing. 1st Edition. Limited first edition of the author's first book, numbered #146 of 200 copies. With Original watercolour by Battiss. The book comprises 36 pages of illustrated text bound in illustrated heavy paper wraps, bound with the original leather thong. The "146" of 200 copies on the copyright page is hand numbered, as is the address "Box 706" for Red Fawn Press on the title page. Previous owner's inscription on title page. The accompanying "Special Portfolio of Reproductions" comprises 33 loose plates, each pasted on light brown paper numbered and with explanatory typed text. Both book and plates are in very good condition. The illustrated card binding is a bit worn with minor chips and small tears, it has pulled away from the book, overall intact, attractive, and perfectly serviceable still. The original leather thong binding reinforcement is still present inside the book, but may have torn on the outside as it is not visible, I'm not sure what it looked like originally. The contents are all very clean and bright. The 33 numbered plates are well preserved - clean and bright with only slight wrinkling here and there at corners. Included is an extra plate, an original water colour by Battiss. There is hand writing in ink and pencil on the plate, I assume it is written by Battiss (please see photos). The pencil writing is original hand writing, the ink looks to be original too, but it could be printed. The extra plate has some discoloration on the outer edges and a very small crease at the top outer corner. Overall though in very good, clean condition.
