Tales Of South Africa (Boer Stories)

Bryden, H.A.

Description:

A collection of 'Trek-Boer' stories, about the lives of pioneer folk and their exploits in hunting, trading, nature observation, and general life and relations with the natives, written in English but with many Dutch/Afrikaans words and phrases being used, e.g.'It gave me a very nasty schrijk at the time,'(p68),'Hendrina went straight to the water vatje for which she had done this terrible act',(p146),'My man and I were each armed with a good double rifle, and had plenty of ammunition, water-bottles, and some bültong (sun-dried meat), biscuits, coffee, and a kettle',(p160). Book condition: pictorial boards good though with a heavily worn and discoloured spine, remains of bookseller sticker on lower front, corners bumped, page edges spotted, good end-papers, fore and bottom edges uncut, text very good but with some gatherings loose (cracked). A fairly scarce item giving insights into Boer lifestyles of the period.
