From the author's introduction, 'In submitting this, the First Edition de Luxe of a characteristic and fairly representative collection of South African Views, printed on the finest quality of Paper in the most Recherche and delicate detail of processes "Photoplatino" and bound in Handsome Morocco-Roan Padded Albums - the author ventures to believe that owing to the well-known generosity of the South African Public - their love for good quality and the beautiful, and the most exceptional value herein given: his efforts will be rewarded and encouraged to place order for a like volume, separately representative of each of the leading cities of the country, and that this present volume will run into several Editions. If the order in which the pictures are placed is carefully followed up, it will be seen that the Author has had in view a possible itinerary of the route that might be advantageously travelled, giving to both Tourist and Citizen alike, beginning at Capetown, a capital Round-Tour, and by adhering to which a most correct idea generally of the country and its possibilities and probabilities may be arrived at by the time one reaches the starting point.' (Transcribed exactly as published). It seems the author's hopes were at least in part rewarded as a second edition was published in 1898.
