South Africa and the Transvaal War (7 vols in 4) (1900-1902)

Creswicke, Louis

Description:

This is an exceptionally good matched set of the seven volumes in four version.

It is half-bound in heavy red leather and matching cloth with gilt binding rules to the covers and gilt lettering and design to the spines, which have five raised bands. The endpapers are maroon marbled paper joined by red cloth binding bands. All three page edges are marbled. Each volume runs to about xii + 200 pages of text printed on heavy wove paper, making more than 1000 pages in all, plus numerous folding and other maps and colour and monochrome plates.

All four bound volumes are in near-fine condition, marred only by some spine and corner scuffing and rubbing and by the usual medium foxing to early and late text pages and page edges, the latter without, however, detracting from the page edge marbling. The volumes are priced in pencil (a total of 12 pounds one shilling) but the only other mark or addition is the publishers' note tipped in to the front of Vols V-V1 announcing the preparation of an additional volume for subscribers of the work. All the maps and plates have been checked and have been found to be present and undamaged.

At a price considerably lower than prices now commanded for such a good set, bidders have the opportunity of upgrading to a worthy library set, which was acquired from the Musgrave family.
