At a tender age he learned the life of the wagon-trekker on long prospecting tours with his father. He fought, as a youth in the Boer commando against Sekukuni... His personal contacts and close association with many interesting public characters are occasions for bringing on the scene: Paul Kruger, Piet Joubert and his wife, Sir Theophilus Shepstone and his young secretary Otto's friend Rider Haggard, General Colley and others.
