Rhodesiana - Pioneer Record - The Comet - Gubuluwayo Newsletter June 26 1901

Various

Description:

An issue of the Gubuluwayo Comet, Vol 1 no2, June 26 1901. Published at the Gubuluwayo Railway Camp. Rather fragile and with some damage – fraying, tears, dsicoloration and some small loss. Overall intact, complete, and totally readable still. These publications were printed on poor quality paper and very few have survived. Three pages, complete edition. Below a quote from “The English People Abroad". 'The first newspapers of the colony were written and published by hand, reproduced by a cyclostyle or some similar duplicating apparatus. The Gubuluwayo Comet was priced at “two tickeys”. A tickey was a three penny piece. These journals which most settlers received by post from time to time, and which were passed on from hand to hand for general reading; told the settler about local life. They were often thrown away as soon as read. Most of these ephemeral sheets, the earliest literature of the country, have perished, but some stray copies of their issue have been preserved, by chance disregarded at the time. They are now among the most treasured specimens of the collectors library, and the most valuable sources of the pioneer history of Rhodesia.'
