This republication was sponsored by two Rhodesian Pioneer families, who asked that it be dedicated to the Rhodesia Pioneers' and Early Settlers' Society (see previous lot) . . . to promote a wider interest in the country's history.

Gouldsbury, a Captain in the King's African Rifles and previously an administrator in the British South Africa Company, died accidentally in Uganda in 1916 at the age of 35.

From the publishers' introduction: "Gouldsbury was a successful administrator and a diligent student and observer of native manners and customs, but it was as a poet and novelist that he won a reputation and was most admired. He was most prolific in his penning of verse, winning wide acclaim as an interpreter of Africa in both its attractive and repellent moods. He became known as the Kipling of Rhodesia and was often favourably compared with Adam Lindsay Gordon of Australia."

The dustjacket is rubbed and chipped but otherwise the book's covers, binding and 264 pp of text are in very good condition.
