Reports, & c., on the Working Of The Refugee Camps in the Transvaal, Orange River Colony, Cape Colony, and Natal

HM Stationery Office

Description:

Please note: this lot is in a disbound state, though all pages are present. "Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty, November, 1901." This is a detailed record of the workings of the "refugee" camps which housed the "Bona Fide Refugees... who have come in from any district (after having signed papers of neutrality) for protection from the enemy; whilst all other classes includes those whose husbands, or immediate relatives, are still on commando, dead, or of those who come in through dire poverty..."[p.9] consisting mainly of censuses of the number, medical provisions, food stores issued, living conditions, dietary requirements, illnesses suffered, deaths, as well as circulars, rules and instructions to the various camps as to how they should be run. This volume of lists, tables, and statistics provides an extremely valuable insight into the very difficult day to day conditions faced by all in the aftermath of the Anglo-Boer War, and gives a very immediate sense of the deprivations and sufferings of those classed as "refugees" after the War. Condition: wrappers in a very worn state, blue front and rear covers worn and chipped, some pages browned and foxed, paper spine all but disintegrated with some fragments remaining, but the contents are in good, clean and legible condition; 387pp. From the library of Sir Julius Jeppe (signed by him on front cover) and also Sir Abe Bailey (pencil notation to this effect on front cover). A scarce item.
