Pierneef - Souvenir Brochure of Paintings
Pierneef
Description:
Limited to 4000 copies, softcover, ringbound. A collection of 32 panels commissioned by the South African Railways in 1929 for the decoration of Johannesburg Station. Some of the paintings were damaged by accumulation of soot, and before the visit of the Royal family in 1947 they were cleaned and retouched by the artist. This repainting is still visible, and they were subsequently protected with glass at the request of the artist. Restoration was again necessary in 1960. Each of the plates in this copy have the title on the tissue-guard page, and are all in very good condition. The front cover is heavily foxed and spotted, as well as most of the page edges, extending into the margins.
