Orange Free State. Postal and other markings 1868-1910. An original study (numbered and signed edition of 125 copies; 1956) (from the library of Andre Bezuidenhout)

Fenn, A Cecil

Description:

This was also published in a paperback edition. It is a sine qua non for any O F S collector, comprising as it does very little continous text but hundreds of useful, well-produced illustrations as well as descriptive lists, attributions and commentary.

From the Foreword: "Little has been recorded about the Postal Markings of the Orange Free State. In consequence over the years whilst examining thousand of stamps I have brought to light many varied and interesting markings not previously noted. / My collection of the Orange Free State, which is the largest in the world, housed in 22 volumes, includes practically all the markings enumerated in the following pages. / I have collated them into 41 different groups, which have been divided into 432 types, and in addition there are another 214 varieties, making a total of over 600 items to date. I am sure that finality has not yet been reached . . . "

The orange cloth-boards, black to the front, are rubbed at the edges and spine extremities. On the inside of the front cover is pasted a cream sheet with the words: "Of this special edition 125 copies each numbered and signed by the author have been printed. This is No 100." An advertisement sheet of the same colour is pasted to the inside the back cover. The endpapers and iv + 60 pp of text, illustrations and advertisements are unmarked and undiscoloured. Pasted to the contents page is a perforated enrolment form for the O F S Study Circle, with the number of this copy (100) inked in below the space for the name.
