The full title of this work is: Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage And of a Residence In the Arctic Regions During the Years 1929-1933. 2 Vols. including the less common Vol.2 'Appendix of The Narrative......'. Large 4to. Vol.1 is 740pp. and Vol.2 circa. 380pp. Both volumes contain many plates which include steel engravings, hand coloured lithographs and hand coloured mezzotints. Vol. 1 also has a large fold-out map. All plates are present apart from a fold-out chart which seems to be missing from the end of Vol. 1. This set has been bound in modern quarter leather and marbled boards by South African craft binder, Peter Carstens. There is moderate foxing and staining throughout, occasionally more severe, most noticeable on the frontispieces and title pages. This seems to be an endemic problem with this book. However many of the plates have been spared and the set is not unattractive. The large fold out map has several closed tears. There is a pencil signature along the bottom edge of the title page of Vol.1. The many photos supplied should give a reasonable idea of the condition. Overall only a good set in a nice modern binding and with a very low reserve price. Please note that this item is very heavy and shipping outside of South Africa would be costly.
