Mountains And A Monastery - (scarce signed and inscribed copy)
Holmes, Sir Peter
Description:
A book about the Spiti region of Tbet, including two fold-out maps (in excellent condition, the first showing The Ratang Gorge, the second of Spiti, Lahul and Kulu), and several photographs. A scarce signed and inscribed copy, reading:'For Bob Paulsen-Forster, the first man I have met to whom I must admit defeat - he is a greater(?) live-shooter(?).' Book condition: blue boards very good, edges faded, slight spotting in places. Holmes' inscription is on the f.f.e-p. with a bookplate underneath reading 'Ex-Libris R.A.H.Paulsen-Forster). The jacket is good, though creased and chipped along the edges, with slight loss to head and foot of spine, and is foxed (quite heavily on the inside as well). 'Holmes was fascinated by the writings of early travellers such as Hakluyt and relished arduous journeys. Fiercely competitive, he was the wrong man to challenge to reach the top of a hill - not least because he loved betting, and usually won. He was also a keen photographer, and he wrote three books based on his explorations: Mountains and a Monastery (1958), Nigeria: Giant of Africa (1985) and Turkey: A Timeless Bridge (1988).'[extract from article:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1387428/Sir-Peter-Holmes.html].
