Corners of boards a touch bumped; spine cocked, slightly darkened and somewhat frayed at head, less so at tail; free and pastedown endpapers pasted together; earlier owner's name signed on title page; hinges weak, with archival tape reinforcing; map creased, with short closed tear (penned note to facing blank reads: 'Notice. Please be careful whilst unfolding this Map.'); occasional fox spot. (Mendelssohn I, p. 337; Czech, p. 36) 'Lord Randolph made the acquaintance of President Kruger at Pretoria, and remarks of him that he was extremely gracious and genial: he also witnessed a meeting of the Volksraad. Leaving the Transvaal, the township of Tuli was reached on July 12, 1891, and the tour was continued through Mashonaland, and after some unpleasant experiences Fort Victoria was reached on August 5th, but the party had now lost a number of horses and mules, and had to refit before proceeding. Fort Salisbury is described as having a "thriving, rising, healthy appearance," but Lord Randolph was evidently not impressed with the richness of the gold discoveries or the chances of their permanence, and Mr. Perkins, his expert, was by no means sanguine.' - Mendelssohn. 'Lord Randolph, Winston Churchill's father, toured the gold and diamond mines of South Africa, enjoying considerable sport on his journey. With 10,000 cartridges among his hunting party, Churchill and his men bagged lion, kudu, and bushbuck in Mashonaland. Sir John Willoughby joined the expedition, with hartebeest, roan, and eland collected near the Hunyani River. The illustrations of camp life and travel are quite entertaining." - Kenneth P. Czech: An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books, 1785 to 1950.
