Magdalena Retief (woodcuts by Cecil Higgs; 1948)

Krige, Uys

Description:

In spite of its poor to fair condtion, this copy of a revised version of an Afrikaans play featuring the wife of the Voortrekker leader Pieter Retief originally staged n 1938 is listed because of the rarity of Uys Krige's work during this period and because of Cecil Higgs's cover design and woodcuts.

The play covers the period 1798 to 1852. It is followed by two pages of comments by the playwright, contributing to a total of 139 pp.

Pencil annotations on text pages have been erased but there are four further pages of annotations in pencil and pen at the back and a few words and marks in the text in pen remain.

The book may be worth a good deal more than the suggested reserve price just for the five Cecil Higgs full-page illustrations, which are unmarked and in perfect condition.
