Lord Roberts of Kandahar, V C. The life story of a great soldier (1900)

Jerrold, Walter

Description:

The red cloth boards with gilt and black to panel and gilt to spine have an almost bite-sized piece removed from the lower half of the front cover (see image). The binding, otherwise sound, shows the netting between the first and second sections. There is a bookseller sticker on the front paste-down of the printed endpapers and there are two stamps but no other markings of the Dooks Public Library, Cape Town. Foxing is limited to the frontispiece tissue guard.

Without these blemishes the book would be Very Good, with the frontispiece and 237 pp of text including eight plates numbered with the text and 31 pp publisher's catalogue clean and unmarked.

The book predates Roberts's appointment as C-in-C in South Africa.
