A survey of the more important aspects of the construction, operation and maintenance of locomotives - steam, diesel, electric, internal combustion, fireless, etc. Chapter titles include, The Boiler, Superheating, Cylinders and Valves, Framing and Wheels, Lubrication, Tenders, Brakes, Feed-Water, Repairs, Maintenance, Combustion and Fuel, Running Faults and Failures, Shop Arrangements, The Enginemen, Special Types of Locomotives, Internal Combustion and Electric Types, Modern Types of Locomotives. A total of 433 pages with photographs, illustrations, of which some in colour, charts, diagrams, tables, data, and index, plus five foldouts. Included is a large folding colour 'Presentation Plate' in wraps, which, however, has separated along some of the folds. Bound in original maroon cloth with lettering stamped in gilt and border blindstamped. Very good, clean condition with only faint occasional foxing, mainly in prelims.
