xxiv, 459 pages, photographic frontispiece, 31 photographic plates, double page map. Original blue cloth with gilt vignette of lions head on front cover, gilt titling on spine – the cloth is lightly rubbed at the top and bottom of the spine. A tear at the top of leaf 20/21has been neatly repaired, contents bright, a very good copy.

Czech: An annotated Bibliography of African Big Game hunting Books, 1785 to 1950, page 136, ‘Rainsford’s “safari” trekked through British East Africa where a variety of game was bagged. After crossing the Mau Escarpment, the author’s party hunted lion, buffalo, and rhino, then elephant near Mt. Elgon. Later, rhino and buffalo were taken near the Guaso Nyiro. He remarks that shooting elephant with a .500 or .577 is outmoded – a .256 Mannlicher or .275 Mauser will do perfectly well. There are plenty of big-game hunting adventures throughout.’
