A good copy of this very scarce African story book, sub-titled " A Selection from the Traditional Tales Current among the people living on the eastern border of the Cape Colony", presumably the 1882 first edition, as it is housed in original brown boards (boards are marked, with gilt spine titles,[second edition had a green cover]), and containing a contemporary pencil note on upper front free which states "Publshd. 1 March 1882", with initials I.W.C. underneath (book seller?). Owner bookplate affixed to front paste-down (Louis Clifford Thompson). Blind stamped ruling to front and back covers, gilt spine titles, decorated brown end-papers in good condition 'flower and leaf' pattern, contents good throughout, tight binding, decorative head-pieces and initial letters, 212pp. total, 23 chapters, including 18p. "NOTES". Chapter titles include The Stories of Tangalimlibo, Simbukumbukwana, Sikulume, Demane and Demazana, the Runaway Children, the Girl and the Mbulu, the Long Snake, the Hare, the Lion and Little Jackal, etc...
