Jock of the Bushveld (first impression, 1907)
Fitzpatrick, Sir Percy
Description:
In spite of the defects described below, this first impression copy of the first (1907) edition is suitable for restoration in its original form with the covers and spine mended and laid down on to an internally new and strengthened binding.
DEFECTS. While the covers remain attached to the spine only by the hinges and gauze, the spine is still integral with the book-block. The covers and spine are extensively torn and frayed (see the images, which also show the binding cracks). Although the binding has loosened, all the pages and plates remain intact. The prelims and some of the leaves at the back are foxed and the front edge of the book-block is also foxed. There is a brown stain at the foot of some early and later leaves. Part of the back free endpaper has been torn out and the reverse of the last text page is sunned in register with this torn page.
For the rest, the book's xvi + 475 pages of text, notes, glossary, illustrations in the text and tissue-protected colour frontispiece (see images) + 22 other monochrome plates are all present, unmarked and in near very good condition. There are no ownership or other marks.
.[In an envelope with the book are two small pieces of green binding cloth and (almost contemporary with the book) details of redemption offers for cigarette coupons from 1000 ("lady's solid gold wristlet watch")down to 50 ("xylorite shoe-lift").]
