First edition: xi, 475 page, colour frontispiece, 22 black and white plates with numerous illustrations in the margins and several sketch maps. Inscription of previous owner in ink on free front free endpaper. Original dark green cloth with gilt titling and gilt vignette of Jock on the upper cover and gilt titling and vignette of a buck’s head on the spine. The cloth is lightly insect scarred and the upper joint is split but the binding is holding firmly, contents bright.
5000 copies of the first impression were printed at a total cost to Longmans of £416. 7. 11. d.
