Description:

[freely translated] " . . . Information about how burghers of the Cape Colony sentenced to death during the War of 1899-1902 met their ends

"Second edition enlarged to include the deaths of General Beyers and Commandant Jopie Fourie" [in the 1914 rebellion following the South African Government's decision to enter the First World War on the side of the Allies]

This is a very well preserved copy of a book whose first edition of 1904 achieved wide popularity for its collection of the spoken words and letters of some of the Boer heroes of the Anglo-Boer War.

This second edition has has an additional 18 pages. The quarter-binding - grey binding tape and grey paper-boards with black lettering to the front only - is very well preserved despite some light staining and rubbing: a price - "5/-" - is in pencil at the top right (see image). The plain endpapers and half-title are sunned and there are neat ownership stamps on the front paste-down and title page, which also has an ownership signature in ink. The metal staples (stitches) used in the binding are uncorroded. The contents - 208 pp including 27 photographs and one drawing - are in very good condition despite some sunning towards the page edges.
