Mendelssohn 2:502. The work is based on Salmon's earlier 'Modern History', but has been much enlarged. There are sections on the Cape, Madagascar, Bourbon, Mauritius, St Helena and Ascension as well as West Africa. Theal criticised the work for its inaccuracies but these can be traced through to the sources of the information. It is one of the scarcer early surveys of the continent as known at the time. S.A.B. 4.120. Pages 626-743 deal with South Africa.
