Handstruck Letter Stamps of the Cape of Good Hope 1792-1853 and Postmarks 1853-1910 (from the library of Andre Bezuidenhout; 1944)

Jurgens, A A

Description:

General Smuts contributed the Foreword from the Prime Minister's Office ("I am happy to commend [the book] to all who have an interest in the romantic days of the early developments in Southern Africa"), while L B Goldschmidt, a philatelic colleague, and H J Lenton, the Postmaster-General, also contributed letters welcoming the book. Goldschmidt wrote: "Mr Jurgens possesses a collection of Cape philatelic material that for interest is without rival; he has so closely applied himself to his hobby that he now ranks as one of the chief authorities on the stamps of the Cape of Good Hope." Lenton wrote: "It has been a matter of regret that the Post Office official records have been very little able to assist him, and I think that this book will be an important record for the Post Office itself."

The red cloth-boards, black lettered to upper panel and spine, have an unobtrusive stain on the lower front cover but no other blemishes. The plain endpapers are sunned, with an owner's signature and year on the front free leaf. The xiv + 140 pp of illustrated text and list of subscribers, all printed on art paper, are unmarked and undiscoloured. Pasted to the verso of the back free endpaper is a list of additions and corrections.

This is an excellent copy.
