Description:
The four books in this job-lot are: 1) "A Visit to Lobengula in 1899" by Lieutenant-Colonel H. Vaughan-Williams. Original red pebble grained cloth boards with gilt titling on the spine. viii prelims, 192 pages, 54 black and white illustrations by Mary Vaughan-Williams, map and a loose insert: Facsimile of letter from Jan Smuts to the author. First edition published by Shuter and Shooter, 1947, Pietermaritzburg. CONDITION DETAILS: Upper board a bit warped, the dust jacket is worn, soiled and repaired with tape on the reverse side. Internally clean. 2) "The Ruined Cities of Mashonaland - Being a record of Excavation and Exploration in 1891" by J. Theodore Bent. Original red-brown cloth with gilt titling on the spine and a border decoration on the upper board. Decorated end papers. xxix prelims, 427 pages, profusely illustrated in black and white, 32 pages of the publisher's catalogue at the rear. This "New Edition" is the 1896 reprint published by Longmans, Green, and Co., 1896. CONDITION DETAILS: Reasonable. Light foxing. 3) "Guide to the Matopos" by Eric A. Nobbs. Original light green boards with a pictorial design and titling on the upper board. x prelims, 159 pages followed by xxviii advertisements, folding map, black and white illustrations. First edition published by T. Maskew Miller, 1924, Cape Town. CONDITION DETAILS: The binding is worn, hinges cracking and the spine discoloured. The small tear to the folding map can be seen in the image provided. 4) "One Man's Vision - The Story of Rhodesia" by W.D. Gale. Original Blue cloth boards with gilt titling on the spine. 288 pages followed by 24 pages of the publisher's advertisements, 14 black and white illustrations, 3 in text maps. First edition published by Hutchinson & Co., London, 1935. CONDITION DETAILS: Some signs of age and use, but reasonably good.
