Groote Schuur (1970). Residence of South Africa's Prime Minister

Le Roux, W J (ed)

Description:

This 40-year-old production was way beyond the standard one would expect from a government department. Its excellence was vouchsafed by a list of contributors headed by Barrie Biermann, photography mainly by Arthur English but including works from the Fehr and other collections. The chapter on architecture was written by Barrie Biermann, then professor of architecture at the University of Natal, with substantial extracts from the writings of Sir Herbert Baker, Groote Schuur's architect.

This copy is almost unblemished, with none of its 128 pages marked, art paper entirely free from staining, full-colour-printed matt endpapers near perfect, and the binding, with gilt decoration and lettering on white Skivertex boards, near to mint. Only the dustjacket prevents the book being described as Fine overall. This is complete and unclipped (price R10 or R12.50 post-free to overseas destinations) but chipped and scuffed, especially at the head and foot of the spine and hinges, and with one small tear and fold at the foot of the front cover.

A desirable copy of a beautiful and authoritative book, finely produced by Gothic Printers of Cape Town.
