"Tiyo Soga (1829 - 1871) was a South African journalist, minister, translator, missionary, and composer of hymns. Soga was the first black South African to be ordained and worked to translate the Bible and John Bunyan's classic work 'Pilgrim's Progress' into his native Xhosa language [...] Soga died of tuberculosis in August 1871 [...] He is considered by many to be the first major modern African intellectual and was among the first Christian leaders to assert the right of black Africans to have freedom and equality."
pp. [viii] prelims + 9-160 text, b/w illustrations + 32 publisher's adverts. Original blue cloth boards, decorative image of Soga on front board and spine, gilt titling to front, gilt title lable to spine. Spine faded, boards show general signs of wear. Text-block edges age-toned. Feps, title page and publisher's ads age-toned, otherwise a clean copy.

- Additional Information: A few years ago the town of Richmond in the Great Karoo was established as the first Booktown in the country and on the continent. Richmond Books and Prints is the cornerstone of this endeavour. We specialise in Africana with a focus on early travellers, explorers, hunters and missionaries; South African fauna and flora, fiction, bibliographies, history, the Anglo Boer war and Rhodesia. Apart from our Africana collection, our bookshops in Richmond - which consist of four Karoo-style houses, six converted stables and other outbuildings - house used books ranging from Afrikaans, Art, Aviation, Biographies, Cuisine, English fiction, History, Natural History, Religion, Sport, Trains & Railways, Warfare to Youth literature. We welcome visitors with a love of books to our bookshops and to this unique part of our country. We are open from Mondays to Saturdays from 09h00 – 17h00 and on Sundays by appointment.
