Original maroon cloth boards, blind-embossed rules to the covers and gilt to spine. The head and foot of the spine and the cover corners are all lightly bumped; the binding is firm and tight despite the start of cracking between some sections. Plain black endpapers, with slight breaks at the hinges. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, xix + 416 pp of text and index + 22 plates + 2 folding maps; the frontispiece tissue and the title page are foxed, as are some [untrimmed] page edges, some back pages and the maps.

An attractive copy of this famous and now rare book.
