Neil Aggett, a labour activist and medical doctor, died in detention at the John Vorster Square Police station in Johannesburg in February 1982 after 70 days of detention without trial. Police claimed that he committed suicide. The inquest recorded an open verdict and no one was ever prosecuted for his death.
