"Hans Sauer who was born in the Orange Free State in 1857 qualified in medicine in Edinburgh and was a pioneer of the Kimberley diamond-fields, the Witwatersrand gold-fields and of Rhodesia. In 1866 he abandoned his medical practice at Kimberley where he was prominent in the fight against smallpox, and became one of the principal characters in the scramble for the Rand's gold riches and very much part of the history of this epic period..." Book condition: very good russet-coloured boards with gilt spine titles, end-papers and page edges browned. Jacket condition: extremities showing wear, top edge chipped and creased, browned.
