Egodokumente. Persoonlike Ervaringe uit die Anglo-Boereoorlog 1899-1902 (1993)
Wessels, Andre and others (eds)
Description:
In this illustrated collection of four edited personal memoirs of the Anglo-Boer War, a highlight is the inclusion of two chapters from the original Dutch version of C R de Wet's Three Years War (see Lots 297 and 311 in this auction) - De Strijd Tusschen Boer en Brit. The editor, Fransjohan Pretorius, tells how De Wet, with the assistance of J D Kestell, virtually completed the text of his famous book during the "Saxon's" 18-day voyage between Cape Town and Southampton in July and August 1902, and how the book was published in Amsterdam only two months later, to be followed by English, French, German, Swedish, Danish, Spanish, Russian and American editions, with an Afrikaans version (see Lot 311) not appearing for more than fifty years. The chapters chosen tell the story of the first British pursuit (dryfjag) of General de Wet.
The second item, in English, is an edited version of the Anglo-Boer War diary of Major H S Jeudwine (who was a general in the first world war). There is some relationship with the first item in that Jeudwine's column harried Manie Maritz's commando - closely linked to General de Wet's forces - for the first half of 1901.
The third and fourth contributions cover respectively the story of one of the Boer internees in Portugal and the experiences of two women in the concentration camps of Springfontein and Bethulie, both in the Southern Free State.
208 pp + 12 pp of inserted plates.
