Die Helde-Album van ons Vryheidstryd (1944)

Van Zyl, P H S

Description:

Although the book - which presents an album of the heroes of both Anglo-Boer Wars - does not appear to have been rebound - the date next to the owner signature on the front free endpaper is 24 January 1944 (the year of publication) - it is unusual in having a linen panel glued to the cover cloth.

Full bound in plain beige cloth-boards with a grey linen panel with the book's title embossed in gilt glued to the front cover - all this fine except for the attempted erasure of a small black mark on the grey panel (see image). The endpapers - front plain and back carrying an 1899-1902 Anglo-Boer War map of South Africa - are both marked with a small vertical black stain at the gutter.

On the front paste-down is a 1993 dedication from A W G Raath [a historian at the National Museum in Bloemfontein] to Oom Andre [Bezuidenhout] for [translated] his "enthusiastic help with the Anglo-Boer War collection".

vi + 418 pp of text is printed on machine-coated paper with the monochrome letterpress illustrations numbered with the text.

This excellent copy of a rare book is marred only by the slightest of damage to the lower fore-edge of four of the early leaves.
