The Girouard volume has 149 pages with 2 folding views, 1 folding railway map and 4 extending charts. It is sometimes called the General Report of the Director of Railways. Girouard, who had been President of the Egyptian State Railway, was appointed Director of Railways South Africa Field Force in October 1899. After the war he prepared a four volume history of railway work in South Africa but the Treasury was prepared only to pay for the cost of his first volume. In 1904 the Royal Engineers published a two volume version of Girouard's last three volumes edited by Major A T Moore RE under the title Detailed History of Railways in the South African War. Moore's 2 volumes consist of a text volume with xxvi and 275 and xli pages with a railway map, 6 traffic diagrams, 2 battle plans, and 10 line diagrams, and an illustrations volume with a general map, 61 photographs and 93 plates.

The three volume set came from the Staff College Library and is bound in their library cloth, all three volumes are slightly frayed but the bindings are sound, there are reference markings on the spine and stamps on the endpapers, the text and plates are in good and clean condition. Postage and insurance will be charged at $65 (UK), $90 (EEC) or $235 (worldwide).
