"History of Persia" author Brigadier-General Sir Percy Sykes ends his historical survey foreword "I now bring to a conclusion this foreword, in which I have attempted to create a background for [this] work of a gallant explorer, who is gifted with deep insight into the mind of the Oriental".

In her own preface to her between-wars journey through Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Persia, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Kurdistan, the author writes (1931) that instead of "seeing the effect of a decade of intensive modernization . . . on traditionally conservative [people]" she found in every country a state of conflict."

Dedicating her book to the Shah of Persia, the King of Iraq and the President of Turkey, Rosita Forbes extends her indebtedness to a long list of ambassadors, ministers, consuls, missionaries and other notables who eased her journey and provided her with valuable information.
